MyTurningShop is kinda a play on words.... obviously I like woodturning and you will find links through this site to my past work (In My Gallery) and current work (On Etsy) and where to find my work in person (Caffe Stella) in Gwinnett County GA.... (Their German chocolate cake is marvelous!).
In addition I also see this site and blog as a chance to express some of what is always "turning" through my head. It's still early but I expect you will see a wide variety of thoughts and questions.... family (maybe), woodworking (for sure!), customer service (likely), wastefulness (hmmm... lot's of opportunity) and who knows what else.
Professionally, I spend my workdays consulting. Historically, my area of expertise has been in parts and service operations for new car dealerships. Currently I work for a major Japanese manufacturer coaching dealerships on how to run more customer focused and efficient operations. Think Lean Management! Have you heard of Kaizen or Elimination of Muda? If so, then you may consider me a Lean Sensei.
My passion however is creating. I enjoy woodworking, first inspired by my father, I have continued to pursue this medium. Though I often consider other materials such as glassblowing, stained glass, and metal, right now I find there is still ample opportunity to explore making sawdust and enjoying what is left.
Take a look at my gallery and you will see a variety of projects. For me it's the challenge of a new technique or new species of wood that keep me motivated. Over the years I have built virtually everything you can image (except chairs, but they're coming!). While I have enjoyed this endeavor for more than 20 years, it was the purchase of a lathe 3 years ago that had the most impact. In retrospect, I wish I had bought the lathe 20 years ago and not messed with the rest.
Turning is a mixture of patience and instant gratification with endless possibilities. While I've focused on building my skills turning countless bowls, when you add segmented turnings (open and closed) multi-axis, off-center, inside-out, etc.... I feel as if I could spend a lifetime learning.
Thanks for visiting my site - and please feel free to send me feedback, thoughts, etc...
